Before digging into making my own clocks and timekeeping methods, I wanted to first start with the bigger picture and learn what it takes to measure days, months and years for a calendar.
The calendar is a tool that tracks cycles more than it tracks time. It tracks the cycles of the earth spinning on its axis, the earth spinning around the sun, and the moon spinning around the earth. Early calendars that tracked the cycles of the moon (crescent moon to full moon) were called Lunar Calendars. Early calendars that track the cycle of the earth traveling around the sun is called a Solar Calendar. The calendar that we use today is called the Gregorian Calendar, and is a "Luna Solar Calendar", meaning it has combined elements of both calendars...but, in a nutshell, that is why some creative math is required to make the two cycles synchronize.

Had an idea for a calendar while back 30-day months every 6 years is one extra leap month to take into account the extra five days from the previous set and every 20 leap years you get an extra leap month to take into account the quarter days that accrue which brings us up to 21 leap months every hundred twenty years or 7 every 40 you can figure out how to divide that up I haven't find you because this is taken into account quarter days not the .24 Exedra actual day you're going to need to lose an extra month sometime down the future as well

That's easy. You can do that with an hourglass if you are patient enough. Just measure the time between sunrise and sunset. When the night and the day are equally long, you're at either the spring or the fall equinox. Which one should be apparent based on the weather the previous months. Then simply count the days until the next equinox, and half a year has passed.

If an Islamic month ranges from 29 to 30 days and there are 12 of those months in a year, then wouldn't an Islamic year range from 348 to 360 days and not 354 to 355 days? 12 times 30 is 360 and 12 times 29 is 348, so wouldn't an Islamic year be between 348 and 360 days? I didn't look it up or anything, I'm just using the figures you mentioned in the video, so is that right or am I missing something?

The Gregorian calendar is only the most popular and exists as it does because of Easter and the desire to keep that holiday on a specific day (thanks Catholics). The best calendar would be 364 days, 13 months of 28 days each and a day 0 to start the new year off each year, bringing the total number of days to 365. It's perfectly and mathematically sound and I would love for this to be a thing. Same for changing the year because, you know, it's 12,019 right now according to human history and not some dead guy :) (Thanks Kurzgesagt for getting us started in the year change at least. Still want one of their calendars but they sell out so fast lol)

Vor Monat
Milo Bem
Milo Bem

Almost everything in your post is wrong. The Gregorian calendar only fixed the small discrepancy in average year's length in Julian calendar. The original Julian calendar was invented by ancient Romans and had nothing to do with Easter. The date of Easter is actually based on the Jewish calendar. You can't have "sound" calendar of 365 days without leap years, because as explained in the video the actual year is a bit longer, so your calendar will cause seasons to slowly drift around the year. Finally, Kurzgesagt's "humanity era" is completely ridiculous because they took the arbitrary Christian era, then added even more arbitrary 10'000 years to "fix it" - lazy non-solution to non-issue.

We should just have 13 months of 28 days, start the year on a monday and insert one day at the end which is not labelled sunday or monday or anything. Plus one leap day according to the 4/100/400 rule. Easy! ;) plus, the calendar would be reusable.

Did anyone else notice that at new years eve in 2016 to 2017, the clock on your phone showed the time 23:59:60 before turning to 00:00.00? An extra "leap second" was added that year. I didnt know this would happen, I had never heard of leap seconds before then, so I was mind blown by this and I started to question myself if a clock always showed 60 seconds for every minute or if its supposed to be 59 seconds.

They do if they don't have clockwork inside them, but rather relies on the vibrations of a crystal in an electric field to tell time.

Vor Monat

Sam Bishara

+Adittya Abir Dhrubo the frequency of vibration of a quartz crystal is counted to keep track of time. For example, lets say you have a bucket dripping a drop of water every 0.5 seconds then you would count a second for every two drops. Same goes with the crystal. It vibrates like a 100 times or something and we count that as a second

+Titan Jazza Mapping the Gregorian calendar is currently the legal calendar of all but four countries worldwide, however many different calendars have been used throughout history, such as the Aztec calendar. Additionally, many countries retain traditional calendars for cultural holidays (such as the Chinese calendar, hence Chinese New Year not aligning with January First), and/or religious reasons (Israel uses both the Gregorian and Hebrew calendars, and most Orthodox Christians use the Gregorian calendar's predecessor, the Julian calendar, to calculate holy days such as Easter) Calendars are a fascinating topic of study, combining astronomy, mathematics, and culture to produce what would seem to be simple, just a way to know what day it is.
