One potential problem. Most of the rear diffs I've seen have the bolt holes drilled all the way through and back of bolts are in oil. That means that since you didn't surround the holes there could be leaks around the bolts. No?

Just one point, I work in engine production, you shouldn't leave rtv 15 minutes to get tacky, you should fit it as soon as applied to get a full seal, we fit ours as soon as it's applied, just a future tip as over time you might get more leaks ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘

Thanks for the tip. This process is what was taught to me by the makers of the RTV.

For the best seal possible, always run a bead of sealant around the outside of the bolt holes. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. I kid I kid. Iโ€™ve seen people do that and watching them try to figure out why itโ€™s leaking is priceless

I know this is an old video, but that bead was kind of excessive. Rember what squeezes out squeezes in also. On a rear diff cover (Especially a open rear end) i dont really see a problem. Ive opened engines up where they did a bead like this on valve covers and the oil pump screen was plugged by rtv.

All gasket makers and flange sealants need some time to cure before the assembly can be put back into service. Failure to wait the correct amount of time can compromise the integrity of your seal. Typically, RTVs require a minimum of two hours to set up and 24-hours to achieve the full cure thatโ€™s needed before adding fluids or returning the vehicle to service.

I used The Right Stuff (Permatex) to replace the cover with a new one that has a drain bolt with no issues. I did not have the holes properly aligned and had to move it around more than I would have liked but still no leaks. The Right Stuff has not let me down and I still have some left from the prior trans pan replacement. I did use Acetone to clean both surfaces and torqued the bolts to 25 ft lbs immediately after getting all bolts properly threaded.

Would it be okay to put any of the silicone gasket/ RTV on the bolts themselves? I'm worried that the oil will leak around the bolt connections on my oil pan. Also, I've had a backyard mech attempt to install an oil pan gasket 3 times and it still leaks (I'm thinking he is putting the blue RTV on the rubber/cork gasket I am getting from AutoZone and he's screwing it on too tight, ripping the cork casket in the still liquid RTV). I guess if you put a gasket on, just pick one or the other? Also also, do you have any vids on installing a regular cork gasket onto an oil pan (so I can do it myself and drop this joker)?

Use rigid gray permatex lay a then bead then smear it with a glove on so you do not get oils from your hands in it, clean is the key to any silcone, etc apply to cover make sure housing is clean and dry, put cover on with rigid gray silicone still wet put all bolts in use a 1/4 inch ratchet an snug all cover bolts wait 6 hours then torque to factory Specifications an then re fill differential with approved gear oil spear permatex white thread sealant on fill and drain plug if equipped make sure sealent is down in threads before plug installation

Vor 9 Monate

Don't use red not made for it permatex rigid gray sealer is far more superior on gear oil, differential, industrial gear boxes , been using it 15 years the red is good for not much of anything really

Why do you use red instead of black? You don't need max heat resistance in the diff since it's not directly connected to the major heat source, that being the engine and my understanding is that black is best for oil sealing. The diff generates some heat from torque transfer but not a tremendous amount.
