+Omar Valtierra If you have disk brakes, start off by checking if the rotor is warped or not and or if the pads are aligned properly to the rotor, if it sounds like a drum beat it's likely a warped rotor.

I wish that was my problem with my 2015 VW. They are new brake pads and rotors. The dealer installed under warranty, 3 xs. Same result... No more warranty and now I'll have to do them again after about 15-20 thousand miles on them! So looks like I'll have to put in all new calipers!

My front left wheel only squeaks when turning without my foot on the brake or starts squeaking after I let off of the brake. The brakes & rotors have less than 5,000 miles on them and were greased up just like you noted in the video. Any idea why the brake is making a high pitched noise? Bad hardware or caliper or dust shield? Not Sure, guess I have to pop the wheel off and look...

Ok so after watching all the causes and fixes of brake noise , I concluded that the cause of my brake noise was probably the dust shield, well thats the one that no adjustment solution was shown for.thats why I gave this video a 👎🏻 Now I did learn alot and couldve solved my issues had they been any off the ones discussed prior to the problem of the dust shield, but that still is not enough to make me 👍🏻 this video. Some may say the solution is self explanatory with a bend / thin dust plate ,but I voluntarily admit my inexperience in brake components. With that being said ,one could also make that statement of a rusty rotor or pad needing to be sanded! Thanks

That wobble of brake disc is there from factory for pushing pads away from disc slightly to keep tiny gap. As a certified motor mechanic you should know that, are you certified mechanic? Anyone without proper knowledge should not operate important car parts, brakes especially. Anyway great DIY video, just dont complain if something go wrong. There are another couple of things that can make brake noise. One  is a rock stuck between the rotor and dust shield (has happened several times). Another is an excessively worn  rotor on the inside when the outside looks good. Always take of the rotor to inspect both sides when there isn't an obvious source to your noise.

I have a 98 camry and when i'm on the fwy and hit the breaks i get some shaking and a growling noise. i have already replaced the rotors, pads, axles, ball joints and outer tie rod ends but it still persists. any ideas. I know its hard to diagnose without actually seeing the vehicle.

Vor 7 Tage

A little late to the game on this vid, but i know on a lot of 90’s chevy’s and other cars, there is a plastic dust shroud in the back of the rotor that can melt and rub against the back of the rotor and create an odd humming noise, i’ve seen it on my personal cars as well as others, easiest fix is to just leave it and it goes away as the plastic wears away, but another fix is to take a knife and cut away the melted components.

Vor 7 Tage
Христо Чолаков

The best brake video!! Also, when getting new rotors, check their width! Don't blindly believe the autoparts store, because I had this problem with wider rotors! Its not actually making a squeal but just as Chris said, its a matter of milimeters, so the vehicle doesn't have any inertia motion, and its wearing out the pads very fast!

Vor 8 Tage
Abdullah McCracken

Another reason - I haven't already seen mentioned by others below - Is a stone (or other debris) caught between the dust shield and the rotor. I'm guessing this one is kinda rare though (considering I've come across it only once in over 22 years of driving).

I over-torqued one of the bolts that hold the caliper to the guide-pins and it broke in half. The hole remained unobstructed by these. But, I installed the most SIMILAR bolt I could find (not the OEM one). Will this affect my braking??? Seems like I cannot get the new pads/calipers to "bed-in". This caliper keeps making noise.

Vor 18 Tage
Voda XTR

+ChrisFix Just the bolt! The guide pin is intact and with all new silicone ceramic grease. I'll disassemble the whole caliper and clean up good the slot where the hardware clips in. I painted the caliper and also that slot. That might be it. 😅 Thanks for answering Chris! I'm flattered! 😁✌

Vor 18 Tage

The guide pin itself or just the bolt that you remove to open up the caliper like a clamshell? If the bolt is tightened all of the way it shouldn’t cause a problem.

Another cause can be the square edge of the brake pad material itself. Most pads come with a chamfered lead and trailing edge, however some don't. So you can just use a bench grinder to add these chamfers and this can eliminate squealing if that square edge is causing it. This is more common on imperfect rotors, and pads without the chamfer.

Really well done video. I'd like to re-stress the importance of caliper guide pins. On my last brake job I did not properly seat the pad and ends up putting unnecessary pressure on the guide pin. Eventually the pin failed (actually the bolt stripped off inside the pin) so it didn't move properly at the bottom end of the caliper. This resulted in very uneven wear and squeaking. Luckily I checked it out over the weekend and replaced them pin. Those pins are tiny but important, and their mobility is paramount.
