I always remove the headlight and use rubbing compound then polishing compound on an orbital buffer. If the light is too bad for that process to cure, then sand and paint with clear is the last resort. Saves time, tape, and water cleanup.

Seems like a good diy project to restore your headlights and it'll definitely save you money from buying yhe expensive pro products but headlights don't have a finish. It's just plastic and they start to yellow from oxidation. 400 and 600 sand paper is too aggressive. But it still had a good result.

THE MOST PERMANENT SOLUTION IS TO LOOK AT A FEW USED CARS OF THE KIND YOU WANT TO BUY. IF YOU SEE THE HEADLIGHTS ARE MADE OF ACRYLIC (HAZY OR MATTE OR YELLOWED) - DON'T BUY THIS KIND OF CAR. BUY ONLY A CAR WITH HEADLIGHTS MADE OF GLASS.

Almost no one knows how to use spray paint. Never start spraying on your item and don't stop while still on your part to start back the other way. When you start and stop and turn back, they'll be a pause on the part leading to a heavy spray. Stop and turn back again your stopping leaving the paint can stationary for jist a second again leaving a heavy spray. Start spraying before you get to your part then keep moving across your part and right off at the other end and then pass back the other way. This way your heavy sprays will be off the part and most of your orange peel won't be a problem. While on the part keep moving. Makes parts look new and professional.

Hey Chris! Just re-watching this gain after a year. I never needed to do this with my current Celica thanks to its glass lights, but I found it interesting to watch at the time. Now a year later I've bought a much newer Elantra with those long prominent headlights (four years old) that are already pretty yellow thanks to the harsh Australian sunlight, so I've come back to actually make use of this video. I'll be doing this over the next couple of days, thanks a lot for putting this up!

Hey Chris. I will try this on my Dodge Avenger, I paid a guy to do it about 2 years ago, but I noticed he only took like 10 minutes. So I’m assuming he didn’t do it right. After seeing all this process makes me want to give my headlights one more chance before I get rid of them. Believe me I want new headlights but they cost a good penny. Well for my economy. Thank you so much for the video. I will try this and see if my old yellow headlights come back to life.

Tip for anyone considering doing this.  I did two headlights on a Lexus rx300. They have huge headlights. One HL I did following Chris' method. When I got to the spraying part the headlight looked new, except that even with a light coat something happened with the coating after about 20 minutes. It took on a turtle shell look, still clear but you could see a pattern forming, I figured I'd let it do what it was going to do and then try to fix after completely drying. The other headlight I did half Chris' method and half the Mr. Clean Magic Erase. I can tell you that after the sanding on one half and the Mr. Clean on the other half - the side that used the Mr. clean dried to a noticeably clearer haze than the side that was wet sanded with 800, 1500, 2000, 3000 sandpaper. The Mr. Clean Magic Erase has a chemical that basically makes it an extremely fine abrasive (google it). I will be testing the results of sanded and then Mr. Clean Magic Erase and then clear coat Vs. just using Mr. Clean Magic Erase and then clear coat.

As a scientist I question the wisdom of putting a finish over the headlight. It will be a different refractive index than the plastic, so the beam will be refracted and reflected. Maguires headlight polish works well and does not leave residue. It's aluminum oxide [super-fine rubbing compound] and unnamed petroleum distillates. Nothing is permanent: It's plastic, it will degrade. I think it's sleazy that headlights on cars are so hard to replace. Plastic is used to save weight - as if that 2 lbs extra will drop fuel mileage.
