This video shows you how to replace the clutch and flywheel on a Mini Cooper S (R56). This information will also apply to clutch replacement in general if you're looking for some tips and tricks for that.
The engine and transmission have been removed from the vehicle in this video. Here is a video showing how to remove the engine and transmission. NOTE: You do not have to remove the engine and transmission to replace the clutch on this vehicle. However, for me, it did make things a lot easier. Given that I was also doing other work to the engine, it made sense for me to remove them.

You have to be pretty careful of the Clutch fork in the Mini. I have an 2010 R56 S which at the time had 117,000 KM on it and one day I couldn't get it in gear. Bought it brand new clutch and single mass fly wheel expecting that to be the problem. When my mechanic opened her up he found a broken clutch fork which was bent to the point that it couldn't push the clutch spring anymore. Love my mini, but the engine is a nightmare.

@ericthecarguy i have a 2005 mini cooper Super charged 6 speed manual and had to replace the clutch. after replacing the clutch, my slave cylinder had to be replaced because it was leaking. once my mechanic changed the slave cylinder out he gave it a test drive and then the clutch pedal fell to the floor. we went under to inspect the slave cylinder and found out the piston on the slave cylinder was bent. luckily for me i had life time warranty from my local auto part store, but once i replaced it the slave cylinder we drove it again and the same issue occurred. not sure how to fix this issue.. is there any thing you might know about the mini and their manual transmission issues?

Hey eric, I just changed the clutch on an 85 mr2 and the darn thing is still slipping like the old one. It got a new clutch cylinder and and new slave cylinder but no new flywheel. Any suggestions as we have adjusted the pedal but it still slips once everything gets hot after driving it for a bit. It just sucks.

A long bolt and a roll of electrical tape makes a clutch alignment tool for whatever size you need. It's actually possible to get a near perfect fit, it feels a bit rednecky but it works well.

A tip for you whenever you have bolts that require a further 90° torque. I make a small mark with a silver or white marker at 12 O'clock on all the bolts ... then when you done they should all be at 3 O' clock.

You are there already, I'm sure that car have over 50, 60K on its odometer, so it is not a good idea to not touch that seal because its not leaking, soon it will, the major and most difficult job is done already, why not spending $20 OR less and 15 minutes more for that old seal? I'm sure you and your customer will be happier.

I find that since the flywheel failed so badly(like it usually does after 100k city miles...) the harmonic balancer had more wear on the other end of the crankshaft turning all the pumps and the alternator should also be replaced along with all the tensioner pulleys especially since when the engine is inside the car you are pretty fucked replacing them...

Eric any chance i can tap your expertise ; ) ? I have a peugeot 207 cc 1.6 16v 2007 92000 miles, which has developed a fault, starts fine, runs fine, drives for about a mile before its bogging out with no power and sounds like its got a dump valve fitted on gear change, so i scanned it and it came up with; P0014 Exhaust camshaft dephasing fault coherence P11a8 Exhaust camshaft dephasing fault coherence P11a3 Exhaust camshaft dephasing fault incorrect exhaust camshaft setting I first replaced the vvc solenoid but no joy so changed oil & filter, still the same, so locked the flywheel and re timed the camshafts, drives better now, no silly noises, no management light but still a little underpowered as if vvc isn't working and when scanned again just comes up with the one fault code now P0014, do you think i need to replace the camshaft pulleys? Thanks a lot .... Jay

Vauxhall Astra B/Opel Kadett C used to have an access hatch under the bellhousing to get to the clutch assembly. Piss easy job. Obviously someone at GM/Opel/Vauxhall realised they weren't making enough money from clutch changes and so it was deleted and you then had to physically remove the transmission... that sucks...

Dual mass fly wheels are the devil! Very expensive to replace, about 500 quid or 600 dollars just for the part never mind the clutch on top of that. Why oh why they just didn’t stick with the conventional spring damped friction plate clutch I will never know.

Ah yes, pilot bushings vs bearings. Bushings will wear, or try to grab the "nose" of the input shaft. Bearings on the other hand can catastrophically fail, with possibly more than just a clutch job resulting.

Yep, good alignment and slowly, slowly is the way to go. A friend of mine did neither of those, he failed to centre the clutch correctly, then used the bolts to try and force the gearbox and engine together. Doing that he managed to take a big chunk out of one side of the brass bushing that supported the input shaft. He learnt the hard way, so good advice all round, Eric.
