Nice job but on a serious note, you should remove the brake pad clips before painting or replace them. They're designed to be smooth and greased so that the brake pads move freely when the pressure is applied but also when it is released. You could end up with a seized caliper when one of those pads fails to release completely and heats up. When that happens brake temps can reach 400° - 600° and warp the rotors, destroy the piston seals, and possibly overheat the wheel bearings.

U have a video to take rust off the frame of the car and to paint a protective coating on it my dad says I should just spray flex seal on it without cleaning the rust but I don’t think that’s a good idea

You should have used a paint with a glossier finish. Your caliper looks too dull. I would have went with red or even (if your car permits) blue or yellow.

in the shop I ask for paint for breaks and rotor, I did the job and after I noticed that paint is up to 500F ...On paint, itself is saying for breaks and rotors but 500 is not 2000 ...logically it should be ok, I'm not a heavy driver, but in worst case scenario anybody knows what can happen ..will I have this paint on fire for few minutes ?? :)

People when you spray paint do not spot spray like this guy is doing. Keep the spray going constantly and wish across back n forth. Dont spray one spot, stop, and spray another spot. Thats how you get uneven colors, coverage, and possible spotting or dripping. Also the finish will look like crap. And color does not affact performance ahahahahah. But red blue or green calipers do lool pretty wikid.

How did you tape off the rotor hat for painting? I assume not just any kind of tape could be used on the rotor surface itself as it may leave a residue. Also, how well does this paint hold up to salt from all us Salt Belt Dwellers?

Chris, your videos are outstanding as tutorials, and I love them. On this one, I would’ve liked to see you actually remove the caliper, if not also reattach it. Perhaps you go through those steps in other videos you’ve done, involving brakes. I’ll look for those, as painting my calipers is what I need to do, but have never removed them and was hoping for a bit of guidance there. Thanks for your work!

Keep this in mind those of you wanting to take this project on. It will take much longer than you anticipated. If you want it to look even better you will use clearcoat. That will add around 2h40m to the time taken. The prep is very very involved, as rusty and dirty calipers are a bear to clean. My suggestion would be to use an actual respirator instead of a dust mask. I used a dust mask for my first set and I was coughing up black paint for days. I have the BreathBuddy one from amazon, works great. Also you will not be able to get all 4 done in one day, you probably will barely be able to get 1 done in a day. Took me around 11 hours to do the caliper and rotor hat, using paint and clear coat. And so far I’ve done 3 sets. Plan to use 1 can for every 1.5 sets, so you will run out in the middle of the 2nd. I’d get about 3 cans of base and clear. Just letting you guys know before you dive into this project. Have fun!

Not be assy but: A brake cleaner might not directly damage rubber. However, any cleaner that removes wax will eventually indirectly damage rubber by removing the wax surface protectants. So better to use tape to protect all rubbers. (ironic, how rubber which usually protects humans, needs protection itself, hehe)

Great tips, thanks Chris. I recommend acetone as a wash myself. And as these calipers get real hot,, you want to use always, a high heat paint as Chris does here. And if you want it to shine and last longer...Use a high heat Clear Coat. Or else it will not hold up over time. Unless you believe that a long time is one year. Rattle can paints = Some are okay. Some are not so okay to use in this application. Great video instructional. I paint my chevy car calipers Fire Engine RED, and put logos on them, then clear coat over the logo. Looks PRO>
