Even after i flushed my radiator twice and added new coolant , after a couple of drives i had to replace my thermostat due to it being stuck open , i noticed my new coolant is brown . My radiator hoses when you squeeze them feel like/ sound like potato chips crunching in a bag . What gives ? My suv is a 99 ford expedition .

You have an iron block so if you had the incorrect ratio of water to coolant, it could have rusted. There are two things you can do... 1. Do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s--5ft5YiHg 2. If it still turns brown a few days/weeks later, do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeruAZebIeU

I love your vids and because of this I just attempted to flush my coolant on my 2011 Mercedes Vito. Unfortunately only 5 litres came out of the 10 litre system and I don't know how I can get the rest of the water out of the engine as it seems when I open the bleed screw from the bottom of the Rad, I am only draining the radiator and not the engine too. Its a pressurised system, are these much different to a conventional system?

+ChrisFix Nice one man, thank. I took it for a good drive today and got it up to a high temp to ensure the coolant was circulated. When I got home I checked the fluid and its looking nice and clean. Thanks for your reply .

There is usually a plug on the engine block somewhere to drain the rest but even half a flush is good.

Great tips 👍 What if my coolant passed three of four tests, except the pH one? It's between 7 and 8, a 7.4 I would say, is it still good for 1 or 2 more years? Coolant is 6 years old now and the orange one which came stock with the 2013 Mustang GT.

why do you set it to 20V, for measuring something way less than 1V? You have 2 and 200m settings there.

A lot of the coolant that is for all makes and models is also yellow/orange, but it can be used in cars that take blue/green or mixed with it. Just so people know. Just read the label before filling, mixing the wrong coolants is a big deal.

Revisiting this Video as I have a vehicle with some Dex-Cool Sludge problems and while it doesn't seem as bad as the vehicle in this video (or other vehicles I've seen with this issue) it does need changing, just that I'm seeing more "gel" rather then Mud. Freeze/Boil Temp is VERY good (almost too good... But matches Historical testing noted in Log). I suspect, it has seen 15 years of service on this coolant (with some extensive lose/top off over that time) but no Official Drain/Fill/Flush... Interested to see what the Multi-Meter and PH testing comes up with. I don't want the "gel" to become a bigger problem but if the PH and Volt readings are in "good" ranges I can be more cautious and methodical with my flush...

hey man long time watcher, still hoping on a reply one day lol. my honda civic 2003 recommends changing the coolant after 200km. my car just hit 200km but the coolant still looks bright green and in good shape. now i dont wanna change it if i can still get a few thousand km extra out of it. but i know preventative maintenance cant really hurt. but i rather not change the coolant if it still looks nearly brand new. what are your thoughts?

If you need to empty the radiator, it might be easier to disconnect the hose at the bottom of the radiator than it would be to put anymore energy into finding a possibly non-existent plug.

I was wondering if you could do a video on antifreeze mixture ratios. Everyone seems to always mix it 50:50, but on the bottle it seems like 70:30 (antifreeze:water) is the best protection. Nobody seems to know. I’ve always mixed it 2 parts antifreeze to 1 part water.. figuring it’s a compromise between 50:50 and 70:30.. a clarification video would be awesome.. thanks and I appreciate your hard work

Chris I have a 1999 ford ranger xlt 3.0 done a normal coolant flush not a super flush and noticed my cap is still getting little pieces of dirt on it? But also I’m curious since one of your videos had a Mazda b3000 in it which is the same as a ranger 3.0 when I turn my truck off the coolant res will bubble then stop, is this normal?

I also checked my coolant today after a week or so and noticed it was about half a cup low so decided to top it off, the res is still full looking tho but not sure if when the truck is warm it takes coolant it needs from the res and into the radiator ?

Great video Chris! That test you made with the voltmeter, I've heard you could do the exact same test to check your brake fluid, and the reading also shouldn't be above 0.3. Do you agree with that? Are the reasons for that the same as you explained for the coolant?

Vor 11 Monate
ChrisFix

The biggest concern with brake fluid is that it absorbs water and you don’t want that because it could cause your brakes to fail.

I have a heating issue with my 2013 mustang gt. i get the car up to optimal temperature and it wouldnt heat up the cabin unless i hit the throttle (higher rpm = warmer air). At first i checked the hood and realized i had really low coolant levels so i filled it up. then i warmed it up back to optimal temperature, but the same problem persists where i dont get any warm cabin air unless i hit the throttle. what could be causing this no warm cabin air problem? PS.the car did not display any overheating issues when i was driving unaware of really low coolant.

How do I know if I need to change the radiator, or just flush it? It's the coolant very rusted. Thanks Chis!!!

Vor 11 Monate
ChrisFix
ChrisFix

The block is what rusts (not the radiator) and it is usually from having old coolant or too much water in the mix. What I would do is flush it out with water a few times like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s--5ft5YiHg and then drive around and see what happens. The only issue with rust and the radiator is that it can clog the radiator so if you arent overheating you are fine.
