5 Steps to the Perfect Car Photograph: $2.75M Maserati MC12

In this episode, I follow a pro photographer (Mike D'Ambrosio) around on his shoot of the Maserati MC12 for sale. He is known for his "Night Flare" shots that help his clients sell their high-end cars, or simply to create a cover-shot for an office or home wall. Here is the BASIC outline of the steps: 1. Clean the car well to allow for optimal light reflection. (Ie..detail the car) 2. Shot 1 with lights on. 3. Shot 2 with lights off 4. Shot 3 with lights on again. 5. Edit the pictures in photoshop using the "mask" function.
This is all explained in the video, but wanted to give you an idea of the steps before watching the full length episode. Likewise, there is a free downloadable PDF with a step by step guide of how to replicate Mike's shot:
    www.ammonyc.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/AMMO_photoshoot_oneSheet.pdf
Mike D’Ambrosio has a thing for cars. From the first time he saw a bright red, chrome-rimmed Mitsubishi 3000GT drive down the street at the age of 13, he's had a love for these machines that transport both our body and our soul.
He's worked with multiple high-end clients, including AMMO NYC, BMW of North America, Turner Motorsport, SPEEDHUNTERS, and APEX Racing Parts. Available for photo shoots in the tri-state area and beyond, you'll find him and his BMW M3 at the local Cars and Coffee, track side, or in the garage wrenching.

Man I wish more people were like you guys, only caring about the result and not about the camera. So many clients here wanna see you have a massive expensive camera when the results have very minor differences Also thing about aperture, if it’s too small it loses sharpness so you should not go to minimal aperture, just go to like F8-13

This is a great video tutorial for someone interested in seeing that anybody can do this... But that final shot is terrible. I light paint in most my shots and he fouled out on the FIRST RULE of editing a car photo lit with a handheld light... COLOR BALANCE. for a $3 mil car, this is NOT a $3mil photo. Just because someone is talking about the image, does not mean it grabs the correct attention from a potential buyer...

I like to lift the subject off the background a wee bit. Make a clipping mask of the outline of the top of the car. Stroke the clipping path with white — depending on resolution, but about 10 pixels Blur the stroke layer to soften it. Ctrl click the clipping path to load it as a selection, and with the selection in place, add a layer mask to the stroke layer. That hides the blurred stroke outside the vehicle outline, and gives a sort of specular highlight around the outline. Adjust the stroke layer opacity for best effect, and paint out manually areas where it does not make sense. Of course, with the clipping mask, you are not limited to the as shot location, but I would still want to make an upfront plan so the vehicle lighting matched and made sense with the composited background.

Funny thing is his light is worth more than the camera, saying you dont need a good camera to take photos and then buy a $600 light should have maybe spent $40 on a shutter release

Vor 13 Tage
graham19922011
graham19922011

I disagree. I light paint for most of my work, and a shutter release is nice, but only needed for exposures above 30 seconds. Since that is what this camera is limited to. A shutter release will also vary in the amount of light the photo has. With a set timer and exposure time, the light will stay relatively the same, the only factor being how much light he shines on the car for how long. Don't get me wrong, i HATE this shot. The color balance is off. The light is shifty and his editing is way too basic to be shooting a 3 mil car...

Vor 11 Tage
Exage304
Exage304

It was sort of old school... Even the entry DSLR now have remote shutter via app so you wouldn't need that 10s delay to walk to the car (and back to the camera) and light it. Still informative, but just it could be really streamlined with with a newer camera or remote shutter for sure.

I know Mike is trying to "prove a point" by using a cheap, old camera...but if I am taking a photo of a rare or expensive car and people are going to view on anything but a smartphone, I'm using good equipment. Full frame or medium format and prime lenses for me.

Vor 9 Tage

Brian Todd smartphones have a higher resolution than most screens. This camera produces images 6000x4000 at 300 dpi. They look good even on my iMac with a 27-inch display. Again, full frame looks even better because more color data is there, but the point is you don’t need anything fancy to make this work.

Vor 9 Tage
Brian Todd
Brian Todd

+Michael D'Ambrosio I said "smartphone", not screen. Big monitors and big prints would do better with better equipment.

Vor 9 Tage
Michael D'Ambrosio

Brian Todd how else would people view this image except on a screen? But, yes, if ever printed, I’d use a full frame.

People don't buy cars based on these types of pictures, they want to see it in the sun in the daytime just normal... BUT these are great shots for owners and car enthusiasts... It would have been really easy to move the car to its left one foot and the hanging red vents wouldn't look like they were touching the car, also that BMW should come off the lift..Finally, since you included composites from every angle, you could have simply taken an 80 second exposure and walked around the entire car with the light, one take... Its done ALL the time and its called light painting. Nice stuff though not trying to nitpick much...

“As long as you don’t use a cell phone” that’s not true, phone cameras have became better and more accessible than dslrs. I sold my Panasonic g7 because my iPhone 7 Plus blew it out of the water. For a pro it's just unacceptable to use a D5200. Don't get me wrong, I do agree that you don't need fancy gear to take a nice picture and a D5200 is a great camera to improve your skill. From a pro however, I expect a higher quality product. You do want to use something like a full frame camera to get these rich colors and a greater dynamic range. Even more important you want to be using a camera with 2 card slots, just in case one fails you have a backup of your work... Other than that: nice video!

Vor 14 Tage
DPer4mance
DPer4mance

+Michael D'Ambrosio I totally agree with you that you can take great shots with a D5200 and it's great to discover the world of photography. If the point of the video was to encourage people to start photography it's the right thing to do. Would I be able to tell a D5200 and a D750 apart on your website (some really great shots there btw!) with edited and resized pictures? No, I wouldn't be able to. However there is a difference... What I meant with my comment was: if you want to take the perfect picture, work as a pro and sell a high quality product you will need better gear. I went from a D5100 to a D750 myself and there is a noticable difference. Maybe not in a multi exposure shot like in the video, but in a single exposure shot (when shooting a moving subject for example) there is just more detail to recover due to the greater dynamic range and you will get a cleaner image with less noise. That D750 will also make your life a lot easier due to it's much better autofocus, ergonomics, DOF control and so on.

Vor 13 Tage
Michael D'Ambrosio
Michael D'Ambrosio

DPer4mance I guess I’ll address this - the point of the video was to encourage and show that anyone can do this with a basic camera. That being said, the result was the same as using a D750 or other full frame body. If you visit my page, I’m not sure you can tell what camera I used for what shots.

Great tips. In the PDF does The information discuss color balance? I am guessing the light bar is set to a daylight balance of 5500-5600 kelvin but many guys might use a florescence or a 3200 kelvin garage light and would be using mixed color balanced lights and wonder why they cannot get the car color to match. The overhead garage lights might bet set to a different color balance too. For the first time I think the viewer should make sure all his or her lights should have the same color balance on all their light sources. A more advanced photographer might use different color balanced light sources as a creative tool. But overall this video gave the viewer good tips to an easier way to shoot a large object without bringing in a lot of expensive photography equipment.

Vor 14 Tage
tommy9927
tommy9927

I'd get a Colorchecker Passport to force the correct colors into my pictures. But that 80$ thing is really only needed if you do commercial product photography or weddings/portraits. Auto White Balance is so good these days that it usually comes up fine in mixed lighting situations and you can still move the sliders around and check other white balances if you shoot RAW/NEF.

You can actually do this with your phone. Just not with Iphones. Modern flagship Androids can shoot in Raw, and in "PRO" mode they have a ton of setting. Exposure and Iso. Newer Samsung flagships have variable aperture too. You can buy lenses for phone as well. Moment lenses are very good.

Vor 15 Tage

You can get apps for IOS that shoot RAW as well. There are even free ones that you can try. Still I think these phone-RAW's are not half the quality of a DSLR or Mirrorless. The sensor is just too small, but it's nice for trying if you like photography.

have to agree a bit here. For a magazine or a wallpaper or as private pics they are pretty awesome!  But, from a selling/buying point of view, when selling/buying a "normal" car, I wouldn't be too happy with heavily photoshopped/adjusted images on an internet ad. Obviously you don't want to turn up to buy a car and all of a sudden notice that scratches/dents and stuff were photoshopped out. (not the case here, but you get the idea). Now, obviously this isn't your standard kind of car, so here it's not a bad thing, especially if this shot is then accompanied by 10-15 realistic shots of the entire car in an ad. Anyway, I do agree that it's good to take some time taking pictures when selling a car. have a suitable location, good lighting, good enough camera, maybe some slight adjustments to the images. All instead of a couple of quick phone shots in the driveway.
